Dr. Ernest W. Cooper, a native of Clarendon County currently residing in Sumter, South Carolina, hails from the small rural area of New Zion, South Carolina, and is an alumnus of the 1993 graduating class of East Clarendon High School. Following his high school graduation, he pursued higher education at Lee's McCrae College on a football scholarship, subsequently transferring to Gardner Webb University with continued scholarship support. Dr. Cooper embarked on his law enforcement career as a deputy with the Clarendon County Sheriff's Department, Manning Police Department, and Summerton PD subsequent to his return to his home region. During his tenure in law enforcement, Dr. Cooper acquired comprehensive training and certification across multiple law enforcement domains, such as drug interdiction, gang investigations, and narcotics.

In 2008, Dr. Cooper transitioned to an academic role as an adjunct professor at Central Carolina Technical College. Subsequently, he joined the Homeland Security (TSA) ranks based in Charleston, SC, before assuming the role of law enforcement educator at Military Magnet Academy in North Charleston, SC, in 2010. Over the span of a decade, he has served in additional capacities as a coach for varsity football and basketball and as the athletic director for Orangeburg County School District #3. Currently, Dr. Cooper holds the position of Director at the Lake Marion Technology Center in Santee, SC, within the Orangeburg County School District.

Dr. Cooper's academic journey is a testament to his commitment to continuous learning and professional development. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science from Saint Leo University, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Troy University, a Master's in Education Administration from Capella University, and a Doctoral degree in Educational Administration in School Leadership from South Carolina State University. His professional aspirations include assuming a leadership role as a district or school administrator. Dr. Cooper is actively engaged in various professional organizations, including the Historic Liberty Hill AME Church and the Gamma Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.  Dr. Cooper's motto that he lives by daily is "When you get to the crossroads in life, always make the right turn."
